There’s a branch in dbatools that holds my attempt to get it working but I didn’t know what to do. Can you suggest how to do it in PowerShell and I can add it?

You can now use the new SQLServer.XEvent PowerShell module to read XEvents (from files or live sessions). The benefit of this new module is that it is coded in .NET Standard and work in PowerShell 6 for Linux.
You can find it here: https://www.powershellgallery.com/packages/SqlServer.XEvent .

Thanks, Tomer (MSFT).
